I had some friends at Phoenix martial arts that were looking for a change and over the course of about four months we came to an agreement and I offered them that change. On Nov. 1st I opened the doors that morning to Waukesha Mixed Martial Arts.
At Waukesha MMA we offer classes for children and adults alike. We have Little Kickers for our youngest students starting at age five. This program is designed to instill the same values that we all want for our children. Discipline, confidence and respect both for ourselves and others. Instructor Mike Riley is an enthusiastic instructor and brings his love for the martial arts and people in general to the mat for our youth and adult programs. For our youth and adults we have kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, combat hapkido and cardio conditioning. Our kickboxing is mostly based on the Muay Thai system with a little twist of Tae Kwon Do added. Our kickboxing program utilizes our hands, elbows, knees and feet to defend ourselves while in a standing position. Pat Riley, Combat Hapkido Instructor, brings over 25 years of martial arts experience to Waukesha MMA and is a certified instructor in the International Combat Hapkido Federation. Pat teaches us how the principle of Combat Hapkido gives us the opportunity to use the energy and momentum of the attacker against them. By utilizing the laws of leverage and biomechanics we learn to defuse a situation without the need to strike anyone. The same is true of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Unfortunately many times while in the course of defending ourselves we are forced to the ground and find ourselves in a frightening situation. The same laws that we use in Combat Hapkido we use in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Justin Hutter, Waukesha’s only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu certified instructor, teaches you how to take control of your attacker and have them submit to your will as opposed to the dangerous alternative. With over seven years of BJJ experience and an impressive MMA record Justin brings tremendous experience to our program. And for those New Year resolutions we do offer a cardio conditioning program that is suitable for both those who are looking to get in shape and feel and look their best, and those who are looking to compete. This class is predominantly female based, but tough enough for our men mma competitors. On Sat. mornings we have the honor of practicing our wrestling techniques with Waukesha’s own Coach Ken Heine. Coach Heine was Waukesha South head wrestling coach for many years and this Hall of Fame coach brings his experience to us every Sat. morning. This is a great supplement for before and after wrestling season. And this practice isn’t just for kids any good ground defense starts with a scramble and this is where you learn it. We’re proud to offer programs for our participants with disabilities, both cognitive and physical. Pat Riley is the state of Wisconsin Program Director for the International Combat Hapkido Federation Defense-Ability program. The Defense-Ability program brings the same positive benefits of the martial arts to those whose disabilities are a little more noticeable than the rest of ours. Of course it wouldn’t be Waukesha Mixed Martial Arts without the MMA aspect. We do offer training for those who are compelled to compete in the UFC or like organizations. Our competition team, Team Fightin’ Irish, lead by its founder Pat Riley, has already competed in numerous competitions. From the Bagderland Jiu-Jitsu tournament held in Madison to the Gladiators Fighting series in Green Bay to The Milwaukee Rumble held in the Waukesha’s Expo Center Team Fightin’ Irish has raised there hands in victory many times. On Feb. 16th Waukesha MMA’s Team Fightin’ Irish are heading to State Fair Park to participate in the Gladiators Fighting 49 “The Warriors”. For more information on that event and others go on line to www.gladiatorsfights.com. The “Team” has been together for about two years and has come to call Waukesha MMA home.
About me I’ve been involved with the martial arts for over 20 years. I hold the rank of black belt in three different martial arts. Along the way I’ve enjoyed practicing Kempo Gojo, Wing Chung, Combat Hapkido, and Tae Kwon Do. I am the Evolution Fighting Championship Heavy Weight Champion with a 12wins and 5loses professional MMA record. As of late I’m studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Neutral Ground Jiu-Jitsu under John Freidland and Muay Thai Kickboxing at Roufusport under the tutelage of Duke Roufus. I believe the martial arts are a never ending process of learning, as is life. Surround yourself with wise and positive people, leave yourself open to instruction as well as correction and you will be successful. This is the principle I opened Waukesha Mixed Martial Arts on. At Waukesha MMA we foster the image that the heart of a champion beats within all of us. Our role as instructors is to help bring out that self-confidence in a safe and clean environment.
If you want to be in the best shape of your life or just want the confidence to defend yourself, compete in tournaments or dare the cage in a mma match or maybe you want an activity you can do with the whole family, Waukesha MMA is your gym.
